MOUNTAIN FLIGHT in NEPAL

This is the experiential popular activity in Nepal which we would recommend that you must do if you visit in Nepal. The experience is unparalleled in beauty. Unless you're absolutely terrified of heights, enter this in your bucket list.

This activity is well suited to all travelers, young and old. Especially useful if you're running on a short trip due to the tight schedule and thus cannot indulge on a nice multi-day trek in Nepal to get those serene Himalayan views. In about an hour of flight, you will come as close as a few hundred meters of the mighty Greater Himalayan Range. We think that that's a pretty good trade off.

MOUNTAIN FLIGHT highlights

  • Mt. Gosaithan (also known as Shisha Pangma)

  • Mt. Dorje Lakpa

  • Mt. Phurbi Ghyachu

  • Mt. Choba Bhamare

  • Mt. Gauri Shankar

  • Mt. Melungtse

  • Mt. Chugimago

  • Mt. Numbur

  • Mt. Karyolung

  • Mt. Gyachungkhang

  • Mt. Cho Oyu

  • Mt. Nuptse

  • Mt. Pumori

  • Mt. Everest

MOUNTAIN FLIGHT DETAIL

  • Leave Kathmandu in the morning after an early breakfast to board the flight (Buddha Air or Yeti Air, the choice is yours)

  • The flight is one hour long and you will be within the range of the Himalayas within minutes.

  • Usually, the first peak that you will see will be Mt. Gosaithan (also known as Shisha Pangma in the local dialect). This peak stands at about eight thousand meters above sea level.

  • Next, you will see Mt. Dorje Lakpa at about seven thousand meters above sea level. Interestingly, this mountain looks like a snow-clad figure of "8" aligned on the horizontal plane.

  • Next, you will see Mt. Phurbi Ghyachu. This mountain can also be viewed from Kathmandu valley.

  • Next, you will see the unconquered Mt. Choba Bhamare which stands tall at around six thousand meters above sea level.

  • The peak that you will see next, Mt. Gauri Shankar holds tremendous significance in the Hindu religion. We have included a photos of this peak in in the gallery in this page and you will notice that this peak has a noticeably sharp point. Accordingly to Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva is said to be the protector.

  • As the plane moves eastwards, you will encounter Mt. Melungtse (a slight flattish peak, 7023 meters above sea level), Mt. Chugimago (yet to be conquered by a climber), Mt. Numbur (a mountain that has a lot of religious significance to the local Sherpa people of Solukhumbu), Mt. Karyolung (with a noticeably thick blanket of snow over it), Mt. Gyachungkhang, the majestic Mt. Cho Oyu (the eight highest peak in the world), Mt. Nuptse (literally means the West Peak in the local dialect) and Mt. Pumori before you finally come face to face with the mighty Everest.

  • The Everest is better known as Sagarmatha in Nepali and Chomolungma in Tibetan. You have read a great deal about the Mt. Everest so far, seen a great many pictures and videos of it on Youtube, but take our word for it - to see it in person is an overwhelming experience.

  • The plane's seating is arranged in two columns, thus each passenger is guaranteed a window seat. You can also visit the cockpit during the flight to take pictures.

After a rest and something to eat we trek across the sandy flat at Gorakshep and climb onto the lateral moraine of the Khumbu glacier. The trail ascends the side of the glacier for a couple of hours before finally descending onto the rocky glacial moraine itself. The trail winds up and down through fascinating ice to the area known as Everest Base Camp, where in spring, we might see some of the expedition teams as they prepare to climb the mountain. From the Base Camp we get fantastic close up views of the Khumbu Ice Fall and we can appreciate just how difficult it is to negotiate a route through the huge blocks of ice. Nuptse towers above us and Pumori rears up behind us. After a short photo stop we retrace our steps to Gorakshep for overnight

Today is considered to be the climax of our trip. We start early in the morning to catch the dramatic views from Kala Patthar witnessing the first light of day shining on Mount Everest. However, we need to get prepared for an early morning, dark and cold temperature departure beforehand. Plus there is always the potential for chilly winds which are quite common. Familiar peaks such as Lingtren, Khumbutse, Changtse tower to the east even as Everest begins to reveal itself emerging between the west shoulder crest and Nuptse. During the ascent to Kala Patthar we can pause to catch our breath at several outstanding view points to snap pictures. After several hours of an ascent, we reach Kala Patthar. From here we scramble to climb the rocky outcrop near to the summit marked by cairns and prayer flags. As we reach the top, we sit on the Kala Patthar rocks our eyes taking in the unbelievable Himalayan Panorama, wandering from one mighty massif to another. We take as many pictures as we can with our camera and take the in view with our mind's eye to last lifetime.

We return to Gorakshep for breakfast and retrace our steps to Lobuje for lunch and then continue on down the valley to the lower altitude of Pheriche for overnight

(Please note that the walk to Everest Base Camp and the climb of Kala Pattar are both tough. Sometimes we may change the order in which we tackle the walks depending on the group's ability and weather conditions).

  • Dinner and overnight at the local lodge (Teahouse)
  • Meals include: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

DAY 10 : Pheriche - Tengboche (3860m)

  • Trek from Pheriche to Tengboche- About 5 hrs walking

After the previous day's tiring ascent to Kala Patthar, today is an easier walk down to the lower altitudes to Orsho and Shomare. If we wish to visit the Gompa in Upper Pangboche we can do so by taking a different trail after Shomare. Otherwise we take the regular trial to reach Pangboche. From Pangboche we retrace our footsteps down to the Imja Khola and up through the forest to Debuche or if interested, we might visit nuns at the Debuche monastery. Finally, we reach Tengboche. If we are trekking during the full moon of November or December, we might get an opportunity to witness the Mani Rimdu festival in the monastery at Tengboche.

  • Dinner and overnight at the local lodge (Teahouse)
  • Meals include: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

DAY 11 : Tengboche to Monjo (2840m)

  • Trek from Tengboche to Monjo - About 7 hrs walking

Crossing on yet another suspension bridge, we climb up the opposite side of the valley to reach the contouring path leading back through Namche Bazaar. A steep descent for down Namche Hill leads to the suspension bridge crossing the Dudh Kosi River and the small village of Monjo. Not only is Monjo a quieter place to stay than Namche, it also means our porters have a less strenuous walk back to Lukla tomorrow.

  • Dinner and overnight at the local lodge (Teahouse)
  • Meals include: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

DAY 12 : Monjo to Lukla (2840m)

  • Trek from Monjo to Lukla - About 5-6 hrs walking

Retracing our steps along the east bank of the Dudh Kosi we make our final ascent down to Lukla, arriving sometime in the middle of the afternoon, affording ample time to relax and enjoy the feeling of a job well done. Lukla itself is a thriving community that is an eclectic mix of Sherpas, trekkers and soldiers and makes for a fascinating place to explore at the end of the trek.

Tour Grading Systems

Each tour is classified with a grade as explained below. If you are in any doubt about your suitability, be it through inexperience or even over-experience; please let us know for the same.

Grades:
Factors affecting grading include: degree of up/down, difficulty of the surfaces to be ridden, amount of bike handling skill required, distances covered and other factors such as heat, altitude or remoteness. All our trips require basic fitness, preferably acquired through riding your bike, and please remember that any cycling involves some physical exertion, so you cannot expect that you will not feel tired on an 'easy' trip. NB Conditions for a particular holiday may vary from one month to the next. The main benefit of grading is to provide an overall indicator to compare one trip against another.

A. Easy - Suitable for anyone who can ride a bike and can manage a bit of exercise. No routes are 100% flat, so expect some climbs and descents.

B. Moderate - Ideal for occasional cyclists and above, or a relaxing trip for better riders. Reasonable fitness required such as cycling, hard walking or similar once or twice a week.

C. Strenuous - Suitable for fit & confident riders. Fitness is more important than ethnical ability for trips of this level, and some specific training or preparation is recommended, e.g. running, cycling, swimming or aerobics two to three times a week (preferably cycling!)

D. Tough - Long cycling days and tougher terrain (for both on- and off-road trips) requiring specific experience of more demanding and technical cycling. Vehicle support may be more limited. You should be very confident of your physical condition and bike handling skills.

TRIP GRADE: D

Ride out of Kathmandu though the busting back streets of Thamel. Leaving the city behind we ride outside the queen forest for while and than bike up to Kakani mostly climbing on paved rd. After lunch head off on one of the best technical trails in the valley (which was used as the Mountain Bike Championship course) down towards Budhanilkantha on wide undulating jeep track and single track and pass through the Shivapuri forest to the Buddhanilkantha, a remarkable 5th century statue of the Lord Vishnu, reclining on the coil of the snake king in the middle of small pond. Distance: Approx 55 km.
Altitude: Approx 2050 m

Here we will stop to visit the Machhendranath temple and traditional Newari architecture. From here we descend on rocky single track to the lower village of Khokana, stopping to look at the Shekali Mai temple, a valley nature goddess. A combination of downhill push and uphill carry for 15 minutes takes us to the picturesque village of Chapagaon. The famous Vajra Varahi temple is just south of the town. Sadly, this temple has been neglected but the old woodcarvings of Krishna and Vishnu are still in good condition. From Chapagaon we ride on an exciting jeep track, more like a roller coaster ride, to the village of Baregaon that leads us back towards Kathmandu along the quiet Godawari road.

Depending upon the season, you may see farmers engaged in the growing rice, wheat or mustard. TOUR DETAILS

  • Morning (Kathmandu Durbar Square)

The historic Kathmandu Durbar is a unique area that appeals to all travelers. It really hasn't changed much since the Malla kings, who ruled Kathmandu between the 12th and 15th centuries built it. The old market, comprised of many narrow by-lanes, temples and local shops holds many interesting sights for the visitor. Those interested in shopping for quirky souvenirs will find good deals in this area. This is where the locals of the valley do their daily shopping. As a result, this area is always very crowded.

  • Kathmandu Durbar Square

Sightseeing tour of Kathmandu Durbar Square, with its old temples and palaces, epitomizes the religious and cultural life of the people. Here, the kings of Nepal were crowned and solemnized. Interesting things for visitors to see are Taleju temple, gigantic figure of Kalbhairav (the god of destruction), Basantapur Durbar, and Temple of Kumari (living goddess).

Then drive to Swoyambhu, visit the worldís most glorious Buddhist Chaityas, Swoyambhunath Stupa.

  • Swoyambhunath Stupa

Swoyambhunath Stupa, built 2000 years ago situated on a hillock about 77 m above the level of the Kathmandu valley. Visitors will also have a grand view of the valley from this spot. The Stupa is also connected to the legend that surrounds the birth of Kathmandu. It is said that when the ancient lake was drained out to form the Kathmandu valley, the shining sunlight became Swoyambhunath Stupa. On a regular day, you will find various groups of Buddhist monks, dressed in maroon, circling the complex. Every one of them will have the sacred prayer wheels in their hand unless they have not caught the fancies of scores of monkeys that inhabit the area. These irrelevant groups of monkeys play prank with tourists and monk and thus this shrine has been re-christened, Monkey Temple.

  • Evening (Visit Patan Durbar Square Patan Durbar Square)

Patan Durbar Square boasts of many famous sites and unique architecture. Krishna Mandir in this Square was built to honor an incarnation of Vishnu. One of the best examples of stone architecture in the world, scenes from Mahabharat, Asia's greatest mythological war, are carved on the temple's walls. Home to traditional artists and sculptors, one can find more temples dedicated to Ganesh (the elephant-headed god), Shiva, Narsingha, Taleju, and others are located at Patan Durbar Square.
